Western Yeast Company’s 2X-2-2-5 has
stood the test when it comes to improving palatability and
digestibility in dog food rations.
These tests took place at a private
laboratory in July 2003. Western Yeast Culture 2X-2-2-5 was
tested against a popular brand of brewers dried yeast in a
24% dry dog food. The dog food diets were identical except
for the yeast source.
TWO DAY
CANINE PALATABILITY TEST
Trial Procedure
One thousand grams of each ration was offered to a panel of
20 Pointers. Bowl position was reversed daily to prevent ‘left-right’
bias. The brewers dried yeast (BDY) was approached on 25 out
of 40 occasions but was only consumed 12 of those times. Not
only did the dogs prefer the 2X-2-2-5 yeast (2XY) by a ratio
of 1.23 to 1 but the total consumption was higher by 3
g/kg/day. See Chart A and Chart B below:

TEN DAY
CANINE DIGESTIBILITY TEST
Western Yeast Company‘s second test was
on digestibility. It was a ten day trial on the 2X-2-2-5
yeast (2XY) versus brewers dried yeast (BDY). Three hundred
grams were fed daily to a panel of six beagles in two
groups. Again, both groups were fed the same 24% dog food,
which was identical except for the yeast source. On the
fifth day, and the next five days thereafter, the stools
were collected, dried and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
The 2XY group of dogs and the BDY group of dogs had their
stools tested for Average Digestibility of protein, fat,
ash, fiber and energy.
The results of the test were non-conclusive or too close to
call. There was only a 3% difference in the energy per gram
and .07% difference in the average metabolizable energy.
Fiber, fat, protein and ash all were close. The only big
difference was in stool evaluation as displayed
below.
